Thanks for having me on your site. I have been playing with old cars a good 40 years but this is my first Oldsmobile.

The short story is I pulled a 71 delta 88 out of barn a few weeks ago. It has not been started since 82. Interior and exterior are excellent. 60 k on the clock

I know for sure it needs a fuel tank. but from what i see under the car and what I see on line are vastly different. Has anyone used an aftermarket tank on a car like this? The tank I found on line is Spectra GM38B. From the pics it looks totally different. Anyone use this tank?

 

The GM38B is for station wagons, not sedans or coupes. According to the parts sites like rockauto, new fuel tanks for your car are not available. If you can't repair yours, you'll need to find a serviceable used one.

One question that comes to my mind is, did Olds use the same fuel tanks for the entire run of full-size Oldsmobiles of that era ('71 to '76). Because, while rockauto doesn't show a fuel tank for '71 or '72 full-size Oldsmobiles, it does for '73 through '76. Take a look at Spectra Premium GM40H. Does this look like what's on your car?

Rockauto says that this fits '73 Delta 88, and they have one in stock for $172.





Rockauto also shows a tank by a different manufacturer, Liland Global, part number IGM40H, for $147.

Amazon has the same tank, but for $276.

 

That's some good spy work Jaunty. The tanks pictured are close to the tank in my 71 98. However, my tank is flat on the top where the fuel sending unit is mounted. That tank might work for Winston's Delta 88.

Winston, can your tank be restored? There are shops that do this professionally. Or, you could order a kit and do it yourself.

 

71 and 72 fullsize use the same tank . it change in 73 and has to do with evap system. i'm thinking about using 71 and 72 cutlass tank. it all the fitting need but is smaller

 

I've got a used tank from a 1970 Delta 88 that looks pretty good. I can post pictures and measurements if there's any chance it would help.
