56 Olds customized trunk
I got the idea of replacing the stock 15 inch spare with a compact one from my on-line friend Brent. He came up with the idea of using a flat piece to cover the upper level down to the deck latch area, and laying the compact tire flat underneath the cover. Not only does it look better it opens up some space to hide tools etc. Since I had my subwoofer mounted on the upper deck behind the rear seat I had to come up with a different approach. I used mostly wood left over from other projects and I used aluminum angle pieces to tie everything together. Some of the support pieces screwed to the sides had to be re-bent to make the resting surfaces parallel, due to the curves etc. in the sides of the trunk, stainless screws were used here. The center section had to bridge over part of the area where the old tire used to live and still support any weight placed upon it.

Showing trunk with regular spare replaced with a compact tire
The tire rests against the jack post, just slide the post to the p-side and it swings up and out.
Construction of the center support, using materials on hand
Center support bridging across the tire well on one side. Used aluminum angle to join
Showing the small aluminum angles that will support the covers
Covers installed
Showing some of the attachment points for the subwoofer enclosure
I removed all the wood and painted it black to seal it before installing the carpet
Starting point for the carpet on the fenders. Made all of the many templates from grocery bags.
Finished. You can see the screw heads and trim washers near the upper center for the access cover to the s-woofer.
