Original Tire Size for 1964 Dynamic 88

Does anyone know the original tire size for a 1964 Oldsmobile Dynamic 88? I have checked my owners manual and service manual and cannot find this info. I want to cross-reference the original size to a modern tire so my speedometer will read correctly. Any information is appreciated.

I have a reference at home that lists tire sizes as delivered from the factory, will try to remember to let you know. I am willing to bet that it was about 27" tall though. Good luck in your search (note to self, remember, remember, remember.....what?).

The tires I was looking for on my 64 Olds 98 were 220/75 R 15s. I looked up the original tires size and cross referenced it. That is as close to the orignial tire size.

Tire Size

Do you mean a 215/75R15 or 225/75R15? Tires in steps of 10mm, such as 185, 195, 205, etc. My B-Body has 14" wheels. Are these original for the Dynamic 88, or should it have 15" wheels?

Book says, 8.00X14 inches, whatever that means......
So yeah, 14 inch is original, as to the 8.00 part, I am not sure.

OK, that helps me. Using tire data from the Coker Tire website, the equivalent size is P215/75R14 (the size that is on my car), or I could also run a P225/70R14. COOL! Thanks for the info!

Here is a link to Coker's tire size cross-reference chart:

Thanks for that info, I sort of suspected it would be width, someplace. I agree with you about many tires today not fitting our older cars height wise. I think filling the wheel well out is very important. I am not surprised to hear about your experience with the bias ply vs. radials either. Taller tire gives you more flex and a softer ride, in spite of the new radial designs that are supposed to be better. Front suspension design may have some part to do with it as well, like Norm has said "The engineers knew what they were doing" in spite of some people say otherwise.

I love when the first layer of those tires starts coming off in sugar cube sized chunks. Spraying all over the road and slapping around in the wheelwells.

Bias Ply vs. Radial Tires

Starfire61: Thanks for this input, that is very interesting. However, when you think about it, it does make sense. The bias ply tires have a taller overall height, but the static rolling radius is the same as the shorter radial tire b/c the bias ply tires have more give to the sidewall. That is why the tires fill up the wheelwells more than a radial tire of equivalent size. The original suspension was tuned for bias ply tires, and if the ride & handling engineer on these vehicles did a good job picking spring rates, bushing rates, etc, then tire selection makes a BIG difference. I think most of us just assume that radial tires are better!

Wheel Code or Rim Size

Hi Everyone - am trying to verify the exact set of wheels I need to buy to fit on my 1964 Oldsmobile Dynamic 88 convertible. What was stock (not the tires but the wheels). By the time I got mine, it had 15" rims on it but my understanding is that 14" rims were stock. I bought some really nice olds hubcaps off ebay that are right for the year so want to go back to the 14's. From what I was able to gather from this site and the web, the rims are supposed to be 5x5", 5x127. I'm not sure of the rim width or the offset. I've tried calling Corker and a number of other wheel suppliers and nobody sells 5x5" in 14 inch rims. They sell a lot of 5x43/4". As I customized disk brakes for 14s that are going on now, there is no going back to 15s. Any help (including locating the wheels) would be much appreciated.

chipowpow: The original wheels were 14" x 6" with a 5 x 5" bolt pattern. Your best bet is find a used set off a 1960s full-sized Buick/Oldsmobile/Pontiac, as Chevrolets of this era used 5 x 4 3/4". I would contact classic salvage yards in your area. I am sure you can locate a set and have them refinished.

I borrowed a set of 1990s Caprice police car 15" wheels & tires off a friend (5 x 5" bolt pattern) while I refinished my original 14" wheels and had new tires installed. I KNOW it is 5 x 5".

This may be totally useless, as I couldn't find the 1964 Oldsmobile sales specifications; but the 1965 specifications for the Dynamic 88 showed the standard tires (without A/C) as 8.25x14". Three optional tires were shown: 8.55x14" for A/C and trailer towing; 8.45x15" (also for trailer towing); 8.55x14" "heavy duty" (available for trailer towing where tires of same size apply).

Way to dredge up a thread that is nearly a DECADE old...

While this may be ten years late, the original TIRE sizes on a 1964 D88 were 8.00x14 without A/C and 8.50x14 with A/C. 7.60x15 were also optionally available. 8.00x14 tires have a 27.6" diameter and an 8.10" section width. 8.50x14 tires have a 28.10" diameter and 8.10" section width.

As for the wheel bolt pattern, every single Olds full size in 1964 (except the Jetstar 88) used a 5 x 5" bolt pattern.

My64 Dynamic 88 currently has 215/75/14 on it and 75 on the speedo is 60 road speed. It has a/c so by your comment and conversion the are 8.0x14. The 8.5x14 isn't enough to make speedo correct

Contact Hess Brothers auto Dismantling in Red Bluff California, they have several '64 Full Size Oldsmobiles. They should still have some wheels.

I don't understand your statement. Obviously 15" wheels will clear your disc brakes. Are you saying that you want to retain the 14" for original appearances? If so, I have a set of four 14" wheels from my 67 Delta that I am not using
They will not clear stock disc brakes. I have no idea if they will clear your custom brakes.

I have a full set of 14" x 6" with 5x5 bolt patterned steel wheels made for disc brakes. They are at the powder shop now (grey flat finish). I could be pursuaded to sell them.

My 64 Dynamic 88 non-AC convertible has Hankook 215/75R14 on the original rims.

While I suspect I may know the answer, I would prefer to hear it from one who should/does know. btw, how do the above mentioned rims differ from factory stock 14" x 6" steel wheels?
