Original colors

What was the original color of a 1964 dynamic 88 394 engine block, valve covers and intake manifold? My younger brother had a jetstar with a 330 in it and the engine and heads were red and the valve covers and intake were silver. Is this correct?

My 63 Holiday hi compression 394 engine was red all over but if your engine is a low compression type I believe it would be turquoise or a light blue green.....Tedd

High compression 1964 394 except Starfire engines were red with red intake/ valve covers. 4-barrel versions had silver aircleaners, 2-barrel had black. 1964 Starfire engines had silver painted valve covers and aircleaner- a change from the 61-63 chrome pieces.

Low compression 394 engines were light green with black aircleaners.

1964 330 were gold with black (2-bbl) or red (4-bbl) aircleaners.

Sweet beans, it's one of them fancy " ultra high compression" engines. It's covered in dirt now.

My 64 88 holiday has turquoise valve covers. When I first got the car it had been stored for a few years. I found the original owners and they said they never did any painting of the engine. When I cleaned the valve covers there was still turquoise color so I cleaned and repainted. The air cleaner was in great shape and black..the intakes were void of all color so I have not yet begun to paint them.
On a personal note..I do like the turquoise color and have painted the timing chain cover and water pump the same color. Hey KID64 how about some photos!!

Outstanding...love the car. Nice clear photo even at 70MPH.(NO VIBRATION?) What is switch just to the right of the speedometer?? Dash looks in good shape.
Hey for fun try a little "Colorback polish" on it. It has mostly petroleum byproducts in it and removes oxidation quick. I had a 69 tempest I thought was light grey..it was bronze..the polish was incredible. I know you will paint it but you may be surprised.
Great car

drives like a cloud! It needs some work, has some vibration at slower speeds. Still running on old school tires. Bias ply or something. That **** is the safety sentinel, moves a yellow needle on the spedo. Have no idea what it does yet. The dash cleaned up well as did the rest of the interior.had just picked it up that's the pic of me driving it 5hrs back home.

Tires stick out as a maybe problem with vibration. Mine did that...they looked fine, nice tread...but found they were cracked in numerous places. The speed sensor is like a "back seat driver" Tells you to slow down ( I think) Some models have a high beam sensor that automatically shuts off your high beams when another car is approaching you.I have the GM mechanics repair manuals that shows both those options and how to use and repair them. If you want me to e-mail the specs I will.

that would be awesome of you! I would love to see the specs on it. Replacing parts bit by bit. All my money is tied up in a nova so every time I get some cash it's goin into this beauty. Needs an idler arm and some gaskets too. Thanks for the help. Karlgurban@gmail.com

I will try to get them out to you in the next few days. I just replaced my idler arm...huge drivability change!! All gaskets are easy to get. Remember there are two idler arm styles
so make sure you order correct one. They also are easy to order and not exp.

It looks like a nice solid car. That will make for an easy cosmetic restoration.
I think the outside would look really good in black. Or maybe a gold or bronze color.
BTW, What beach are you near? Daytona?

It needs some mech work too but nothing like my other project. My younger brother had a 64 jetstar88 that was black with a white top and it looked really good. I live near lantana beach down here in south east Florida.

Safety Sentinel is the same as later Speed Alert speedometer. You set the yellow pointer to a speed you don't want to exceed (wassup with that 90 mph?!) and when the speedometer needle hits a contact on the yellow pointer, a buzzer squalls and that little yellow jewel beside the SS **** lights up to let you know, hey bubba, you're traveling faster than you want to.

My experience is after so many years they don't work too good. The one in my green Starfire will stop the speedometer needle. Neither the buzzer nor warning light works. Just not a priority to pull the dash to fix it.

But, as you see, 70 mph is quite comfortable for this car. It was MADE to travel at those speeds.

The guy I bought it from had been driving it for a few weeks as his daily driver. He had set it to 90mph. I'll have to check to see if the light and buzzer work.

Nope. All 330 motors were gold.

Sounds good to me. The guy we got it off of had been doing some work to it, I'm sure he just liked the way the red looked.

I'm not too far away in the northwest corner of metro Orlando.
Are you going to the spring car show in Daytona? It's a big meet . The car show, car corral, (for sale) and swapmeet usually cover most of the Daytona International Speedway infield. Several hundred acres. This year it will be on March 23-24.
If you'd like, send me a PM with your phone number and I'll call you and we'll chat.
