Loud "ping" when I stepped on the brakes

85 Delta 88 2Dr

OK Yesterday I when to change the rear drum brakes. I take the drum off and I still have a lot of shoe left, so I adjusted the brake and put the drum back on. Had to use a hammer to tap it back on. A few taps, not hitting like breaking rocks.

Took the car to work last night (2.5 miles each way) no issues

Took the car to Walgreens today (about 1.5 miles) Park, buy stuff, come out, start car, release parking brake, push foot on brake pedal and I hear a loud "ping" from the adjusted wheel and the brake pedal goes down a little futher. "Brake" light on the dash lights up right away with the rapid warning chiming.

Drove the car home, brakes were kinda like a "two stage" process. I push them and the car would slow, then the pedal would go down more and the car would stop. Didn't see any brake fliud leaking out

Won't have time to get into it until Monday.

Any ideas? I know I screwed somethng up.

Possibly a brake spring came off?

X2 brake spring popped off and the secondary shoe isn't engaging until the the primary shoe gets pulled on hard enough to unseat it and rub.

If the brake lite is on then the wheel cylinder is extended out and may start to leak due to a spring popping off, The pedal may jump back at you if the spring gets caught between the shoe and drum be careful.

Why did you have to hit the drum with a hammer to get it back on?. Could be you dislodged the lining from the shoe in the process without realising.
A broken spring wouldn't affect brake travel, but you might well have a biding brake, if the lining came off you would have a sudden increase in pedal travel.

Seems like your dual circuit brakes are doing their job, and telling you so.

Sorry I never updated this

The loud ping noise happened because the brake line for the rear brakes just snapped. I needed to get a new brake line installed for the rear axle. Car was due for inspection anyway, which is would have failed for the brake line anyway

Yes the brake was broke
