How many of you have/had 88's with a 4bbl

I have heard they are stock on many, but grandpa, who gave the beauty to me, says it were stock, not many had the 4bbl. He also said that the transmissions weren't necessarily meant to take the kind of abuse that the secondaries of a quadrajet would put out. Is this true? I don't know where he was getting his info, other than being up there in age and having a lot of general car experience. What say you?

depends on the year of course, 88s started back in the 50s (88, Super 88, Dynamic 88, Delmont 88, Delta 88, Jetstar 88)

my 75 was standard with a 4 barrel but I know that the big cars (B/C body) had the TH400 transmission so that's should be ok

I'm sure we will hear more, but what year / model 88 is most likely important

and my 350/4 is a gas hog but it runs great

Along the same lines, Frankenstein (53 88 with a 65 Delta 88 front frame, 425/TH400 s/p) still has the original rear end with 3.23 gears. The 425 was a 2-bbl, but I eventually plan to put in the Q-Jet and dual exhaust that engine is begging for. Think the rear end is up to it?

Your car because it came with the 455 already has the turbo 400 and it will handle the addition of the 4-barrel just fine. Add dual exhaust and you ever get more out of it.

My '68 Delta Custom came standard with the 4bbl, and as I was 18 when I bought it, I abused the living hell out of it, and the tranny never blinked!

By the 60s any 88 could handle a 4 barrel and performance parts without a problem. I don't know much about the 50s models.

My'63 Super 88 came with the 4-bbl but has been replaced with an edelbrock 4-bbl and runs great. I just wish the stock air cleaner would fit-anybody have any suggestions?

I'm not sure if this one counts....But I've frequently heard my previous Custom Cruiser referred to as an 88 Custom Cruiser(as in Delta 88, not 1988. It was an 83). I've seen that in repair manuals, computer databases, etc.

Anyhow, it had a 302 with a 4bbl QuadraJet. Had a nice lope to it, but not much for power with those highway gears.

That would be a Ford motor, likely that you had a 307 Olds in there.

LOL, duh, my mistake. I meant 307. I even had a long-winded argument with some kid that there was such thing as a 307. He insisted there was such thing as a 302, but no one ever made a 307. I showed him the engine and proved him wrong.

I can relate as a couple of decades ago some kid was at my buddies house, where we working, on his '68 Z/28, with my '66 GTO parked nearby, insisting that Olds never put the 455 in a Cutlass. I wanted to wring his neck, but fortunately I had a Chiltons/Olds paperback repair manual nearby to shove under his nose!
