I own a 1972 98 Regency, 75th anniversary edition Oldsmobile. 42K original miles, mint condition. This is my 3rd 72 Regency. Also own a 1966 Imperial LeBaron with 26K miles on it. I have known about this forum for years, I have never been motivated to join it. I basically joined to view the pictures, anyway...

Well welcome to the site and I hope you enjoy your stay. I always liked the Regency model, owned a '76 98 Regency once that was very comfortable and a very good cruiser.

Sorry for the delay on the pictures guys. It has been cold, or rainy, or snowy here (Arlington, TX). I have been meaning to go to the local park and take nice digital shots of it. I just don't take the car out in anything but perfect weather...it is in mint showroom condition, and I intend to keep it that way. In my opinion, 1972 is the best 98=lower compression and a tolerance for unleaded=but still pure styling unadulterated by the Fed. The Regency is the king of the crop. Anyhow, I will get pics posted for everybody in the coming weeks.

The weather was halfway decent today. I really wanted to get the car washed, pretty up, etc, for the pics but no time. I started it up, backed it out of the garage and took some shots of it, dusty and all. The car is very near mint. I hope everybody enjoys these hasty pics. I will take some good glamour shots of it soon. Again, the car is covered with a film of dust. The Tiffiany Gold paint is dazzeling in direct sunlight! This car is all as it left Lansing, except for tune up parts, tires, exhaust, and battery.

 

Beautiful car. I love the 98 body style from 1971-76. Looooonnngg and flowing lines just look excellent on them. BTW, if you need a place to store it, LMK. I'll store it in my driveway and make sure it gets driven "periodically" to keep it in good running shape!

Does it have a Tiffianay clock too?

 

Yes it has a Tiffiany clock, and it works! Also, special 75th ann. starburst ignition key, sterling silver key chain, and special brochure (and a congradulations letter to the original owner from the selling dealership, proclaiming this to be the finest Oldsmobile ever built). This car when cleaned and detailed, makes people's mouths water. It is very attractive. The car has cruise control, Comfortron fully automatic HVAC system (with the little selector wheel-very rare and desirable option), power seats, windows, and locks. Of course 400 auto trans behind the standard 455 rocket with 4 barrell quadrajet, and power steering plus power front disk brakes. Also has nite watch time delay headlights, and rear window defroster. Oh yeah, and 8 track too...that is Led Zeppelin number 3 in the player...sounds great. (Immigrant song rocks) Also, auto trunk opener. About all it lacks are the deluxe wheel covers (which I will install, if I ever find a mint correct 1972 set...my other 1972 Regency had the delux wheel covers in mint shape, but lacked Comfortron and nite watch and cruise...odd) and outside thermometer. Also has tilt/telescope and delux steering wheel. Car is pristene...

 

Do you have air shocks on the car? The rear seems jacked up a little.

I had a '72 98 that was just the base model (crank windows, no cruise, etc.) not an LS. It had those same hub caps you have on yours.

The '72 98 LS I have now has the deluxe caps...and I think the hub caps you have now do not get pitted up like the deluxe caps...but then again, your car will never see snow or salt.

 

No air shocks, what you see is an illusion due to the downward slope of my street. The car is quite level, which will be evident when I do glamour pics.

I saw a base 1972 98 years ago, just like you are describing, I almost bought it since I am madly in love with everything about these cars. The best year for the 98, I feel.

Yes, my base hupcaps seem to be made of stainless, no pitting up. The deluxe hubcaps seem to be made of chrome plated pot metal, hence the pitting. The deluxe hubcaps are much more attractive though. There is a pair for sale on e-bay for 50 bucks, and a stand alone for I think 25 bucks, so I could buy 3 at the moment and probably purloin another at a local yard, CTC Auto Ranch is just up the road, but most of thier stuff is overpriced junk. I have seen a couple NOS ones on e-bay in the past several years, I am willing to pay the premium for perfect examples. If you come across any, let me know. It seems a shame to have these dull hubcaps on a Regency, but they are the hubcaps that appeared on the car in the original advertisements.

Anyway, I attached an engine compartment pic to this post. I ran out of space for pics in the other post. It needs some tidying up, but again, its all stock. I even like the finely engineered appearance of the underhood area, you can tell they were proud of what they were building, as it is astetically pleasing. (Blue paint, organized appearance, 455 rocket decal, etc)

 

You mentioned you were looking for wheel covers. Do you know if the wheel covers from the 71 and 72 are the same? I have a good set of wheel covers on my 71 98 that I would be willing to part with. Eventually I am getting a set of Cragars for my 98. Let me know if you want me to take some pics of them.

FWIW, I did sell my 64 98. It was definitely a project that needed work. That is why I got rid of it.

Now I own a 71 98. It is in much better shape. I hope to paint it this summer. In fact, I started sanding the body last weekend.

Too bad the wheel covers from a 71 are different than a 72. As I said, I plan on putting black Cragar Soft 8s on my car soon. I think they will look great with wide whitewall tires.

BTW, I think I've seen your car multiple times in Lawton, OK. Did you purchase your Olds recently? I've only noticed it the past month or so. You might have noticed my 71 98 from time to time. It is Sandalwood and currenlty doesn't have the front bumper on it. Plus, the front nose cone is primer red.

 

Where are you going to get those wide white wall tires? Everywhere I look, it is about $250 per tire. I don't want to spend more than $100 per tire - I guess I am a cheap a$$.

 

That sounds about right. I haven't bought the tires yet but you can order from Diamondback Tires for about $200 a tire in size P235/75R15.

 

That could not have been me in Lawton, I have not been there in over a year. I live in Arlington, TX, and when I was in the USAF (till Dec 08, spent 8 years in it), I used to go to Lawton every other weekend or so. For those trips, Iwould drive my 72 98 Regency with the black interior. So you may have seen it back in 07 and 08 cruising Lawton. I use to drive that car all over the world. I always put premuim in these things and don't give a second thought to gas milage. I sold it to another early 70s Olds 98 buff several months ago, it is currently in New Orleans, LA, where it is treated with a velvet glove by its current owner (an older gent).

I have never seen your 1971 98 on the road, in fact the only other 1971 98 that I can ever recollect seeing was a two door that another GI used as a daily driver in San Antonio, I remember that its grille was smashed in. Of course, I have seen several 71s sitting: junkyards, etc. My english teacher in high school drove a 1973 98 Regency that had over 300K miles on it, still looked pretty good too.

Good luck with your painting efforts, I am glad that you are keeping that thing on the road and in the public eye. The 1960s-early 1970s Olds 98s really had gobs of class-styling based on high drama and formality.

As for white walls, try e-bay, I found a good set for my 53 98 on there.

Hey and welcome to the forum. Beautiful '72 you have there. I've been into 98's pretty much my whole life and I don't think I've actually ever seen a Tiffany one before. I have 2 '76 Regency Coupe's and love them. As for the wide white walls, I have a set of Firestone FR721's on one of my cars and wish they were still in production. My other car has a set I picked up from Coker tire. They're still 235/75/15 and have the same size white wall as the Firestone, but I was told they're made by Yokohama. They're good tires and ride about the same but my problem with them is that the white walls themselves just never look as white as the Firestones. Unfortunately, we don't have options in this department. I believe the tires were relatively inexpensive...somewhere in the $70 per tire range...this was a few years back.
