Cloth convertibles - Worth the $$$ in the long run?

I need to start saving up for a replacement top for my '64D88. Body plate says RA (Cashmere Beige/Ebony Black) and I'd like to return to it as this is a # match.

Also I'm outside of Charlotte, NC. I've gotten a few referrals to some resto shops but would welcome input from you folks. My AACA friends apparently have deeper pockets...

Car has a vinyl top now; I'm enthralled with cloth but wow is it pricey!

We enjoy our convertible very much. I put a new top vinyl which is correct on it about 3 years ago. For the majority of the time it is down. I hate dealing with the top boot so it stays off unless we are going to a show or something like that. This year I have been noticing how that is taking it's toll on the underside (cloth) side of the top in the forward third of the top. That is what is exposed when the top is down. It is fading and I don't like looking at it when the top is up from the inside of the car. So, I will be using the top boot more in the future to protect the top when it is down.

I do very much like a cloth top too. But on my car it is not correct but they sure show some extra level of class.

Vinyl top was original on a 64.
Cloth tops weren't used much after 1955 or so.

Good information all the way around. Yes, the parade boot is a pain but it sure helps keep the fade down. I'm thinking a black vinyl roof with beige undersides/pads would do quite nicely. Thanks guys.

I have a cloth top on my '62. Yes, I know it is not period correct. But then, it is my car and I may do whatever I damn well please. The cloth is a bit pricey, but it also makes quite a statement.

Agreed and it looks awesome on your car!

I think the black top is the way to go. Just have to see where the dollars end up. I also want to do front disc brakes at some point and new exhaust.
