Big 88 Custom
Big 88 Custom
Here's my 1968 olds custom 4 door. Currently have the 455 4bbl out of it and doing a rebuild to bump up the horses some. Need a bit to pull this beast down the road at a decent pace. Going with typical edelbrock aluminum heads, dual plane intake, fairly aggressive Comp Cam, bored .030 over, roller rockers and true roller timing chain, 2800 stall converter and hopefully a set of headers. May have to have them custom built as I have yet to find any that will fit a 1968 Delta. Anyhow, hope to have a bit of a sleeper. Maybe surprise a tuner or two at the stoplights.
Nice looking car. I like the addition of the hood ornament on there. You are right about the lack of headers for those cars. I had the same problem with a '69 Delta I owned. The position of the steering box behind the control arms kinds of binds things up in that area.
You're right. Meant 1800 stall. Trying to do the 'Car Craft' build they featured on a 455 to make 500 hp. Not sure I can get there with what I have. Might have to do some work on the heads. Also was hoping to keep the Q Jet. But might have to spring for a 750 holley. And the header issue is a problem. Wondering about the stock exhaust manifolds. There's not much too them. Pretty short and open. Wonder how poorly they really flow. Heard that headers will add 20 - 40 hp alone. But custom built will be a mint for sure.
Why do you want Edelbrock heads? Stock Olds heads will flow just as well if you are going to port them anyways. I'm sure you aren't too concerned about saving weight since you have a B body.
BTW, that is an awsome car. Welcome to our site.

I thought about keeping the stock heads because the flow almost the same but they would require a complete reconditioning that runs about $400 at my local machine shop. They also have 80cc combustion chambers where the edlebrocks have 77cc so a tad bit more compression can be had with the edlebrocks. And finally as crazy as this sounds given the car weighs about 5300 lbs stock, the edlebrocks weigh about half what the stockers do. That weight loss plus the reduced weight if the aluminum intake equals about 100lbs. I pulled the AC compressor off and plan to put lightweight pullys as well as an aluminum radiator. I'll end up shedding between 200 & 300 lbs. Maybe not much in such a heavy car but every little bit helps!
Another plus with the aluminum heads is they run cooler so you can run higher compression with out an octane adder. Helps boost those hp numbers and still run on pump gas. Also comes with hardened seats and big valves.
When I weighed the costs I found a Edelbrocks (bought on E-bay from private sellers) to be cheaper. I have bought two sets this way.
