'66 Jetstar suspension/steering issues
Hi all,
Another question about the Jet that I haven't yet had to deal with, hoping someone could help me out with any info.
Noticed a deep 'whoo-whoo-whoo' noise in the tire department coming from the front end, only after I got up to town speed (35 or so). Took the tires off and noticed a lot of grease on the area around the tie rod ends (both sides, more on the driver's than passenger's, though), also pulled off a bit of rubber that looks threateningly like a seal from the driver's side. I'm assuming this whole piece needs to be replaced- is this something I can do on my own, or do I need to go to a shop? (Trying to avoid getting told I need a thousand bucks worth of work done when really I could just have fixed it myself) Is it normal for ANY grease to be around the grease joints? I've always noticed some, but never this much.
Also, been pulling to the left whenever I break; I go straight when I'm driving and let go of the wheel though. Is this an alignment problem or a brake tightness problem?
Thanks for any help, I can always use all of it!

Wheel pulling to one side during braking is usually an alignment issue.
How many miles are on the car?
If you have the cash, save yourself headaches and get the front end redone. Kit costs a few hundred from Kanter. Get the whole thing done while it is apart.

Sounds [?] like a wheel bearing to me, which would account for both the noise and pulling issues.
Although the pulling is usually brake related when applying pressure - check to make sure the air pressure is the same in both front tires, as that'll give the same effect.

My '67 pulled right during braking when I first got it. Solved that issue by installing new disc brakes up front!
If the car goes straight on a level surface without your hands on the wheel, and only pulls during braking, you need your brakes checked and adjusted. Have the mechanic check over the whole front end at the same time.

As far as the grease boot on the tie rods, they can be replaced with an aftermarket one. I would get my front end checked for wear, and also look at my brakes and wheel bearings. The pulling issue generally as others have said is not an issue of alignment, however it can be attribured to worn parts!
If the suspension parts were that worn there would be complaints about noises over bumps and during steering. Not to mention you would feel it every time the load changed during braking and accerlerating.
Not to mention the car would wander all over the road while driving because the suspension angles would be changing evey time the load direction changed.
Its much more likely a brake adjustment problem. Especially with drum brakes.
