64 88 runs out of fuel when going up hill, if under half tank

Going up and 8 mile grade the other day, had around 1/4 tank it dies out on me, carb bowl was completely dry. Called aaa they brought 5 gallons, witch put me near half tank, it still would not pump fuel to carb, so the aaa driver helped me point front of car downhill, then it started right up.
Pump is a newly rebuilt from then and now, so im trying to rule that out. All rubber line is new, so i pulled vacuum on the suction side of pump all they way back to the tank, and it holds vacuum. So then i pressurized it and it holds pressure. So i dropped the fuel tank, i found the pick up sock is split in half. Would the sock being split make the pump suck air when going up hill?

Does any one know where i can find the fuel pump sock, or a new gasket where the fuel pump sender bolts to tank.WP_20140612_002.jpg

No the sock is at the bottom of the tank, when it reads 1/4 is it really 1/4 or out of fuel?

What's the diameter of the pickup tube, and what angle does it come down at?

Here's what I found out about some later models.

My sock has a 3/8 inlet, but instead of that 90 deg, angle mine has a straight inlet, that lays across the bottom of the tank. When the tank is at 1/4 tank it has 1/4 tank because on the flat i have ran the gauge down to empty and it was still running.

This looks similar but i couldn't find and specs on the length

Any one have any ideas on where i can find a new cork gasket for the sender unit

Take your old one down to NAPA and have then start opening boxes until you find one that's right.

If the pickup doesn't extend all the way to the bottom of the tank, you may be able to solder on an extension.

If this is a reliably repeatable problem, then it may be the result of your tank's design.
You may benefit from extending the pickup toward the rear of the tank.

It would appear your tank pickup is not positioned correctly so it pulls from the bottom of the tank or as said far enough to the rear although most tanks have baffles inside to keep fuel from sloshing side to side and front to back excessively. It could be another problem too as I had a similar problem. It wasnt because I was going up a hill and the pump not picking up fuel but it was because I had a restriction in the fuel line or pump inlet which caused reduced fuel to the engine when needed as in going up a hill or rapid acceleration. The inlet of the fuel pump had become 80% clogged with a paper like substance which was a coating of varnished fuel that had coated the inside of the fuel line. Whith me driving it had broken off and got stuffed in the fuel pump inlet. It resembled onion skin. Perhaps your lines need to be blown clear just to be sure.

I had a similar problem with a 74 Monte Carlo many moons ago. Ran fine on the level ground, but would bog badly when going up a steep incline. Ended up being a weak fuel pump. I put in a new pump and it ran great uphill.

Found a sock at summit racing that was just a littler shorter, i also ordered the nos one from ebay, just in case. I made a gasket out of some sort of fuel resistant gasket material. Got the tank back in, and hopefully it wont leak. Sadly didn't find a pin hole in the suction side, so i will try going up hill and see if it quits running again.
The gauge works, other then it bounces around with the blinkers, and drops when the headlights are turned on.
