thanks, is there a way to check the dwell without actually having the car running? My dad's delta won't even run at idle properly. we did a complete tune up with plugs, cap, and rotor and it won't run right even if at all. i did a rebuild on the carburetor a couple months ago but we realized that after awhile of trying to start it, fuel starts leaking through the bowl and main carb gaskets. My dad thinks its the carburetor and i think its the ignition timing. Any ideas?

How old are the points? also condenser. Unless you know they have been recently replaced, replace them both.

The condenser is the small canister looking thing usually strapped to the coil. The points are inside the distributor.

got it, found it and replaced it. Turns out that was the problem. The point set was down to bare metal. Runs like a champ now. Thanks for the help guys.

Just to be clear, you check the dwell setting first, then check timing on the crank with the timing light, right? and for sure it is 30 for the dwell specs? Does anyone know what the vacuum pressure should be on the 2brrl rochester carb on a 455?
