1964 Starfire Gas Tank up date

Got off the phone with Rodney at the radiator shop. He got it clean and most of the rust out. However, he said that there is a 6 by 9 inch area that is rusted beyond repair.

I called gas tank Renu and he said it would cost a minimum of 300 but by my description of the tank it would realistically be 600 to 700 dollars.

Should I just put a fuel cell in the trunk for now for under 200?

Has anyone done this before?

I just want to drive the car and have fun and am not too concerned about keeping it stock.

Maybe I'm missing something, but if it's been dipped to get rid of rust, any body could weld a 6 x 9 patch on it now. 2 or 3 cans of red gas tank liner and you're good to go.

My tank was beyond the abilities of the radiator man I took it to.

I just sent my tank to Looper Servicecenter in Rockville, MD. They have a Gas Tank Renu franchise. Glenn said he does about 80 tanks a month and rarely has a tank shipped to him that he can't restore. He said that he has even restored tanks that were pulled out of the swamps in Louisiana.

It cost just over $100 to have Postnet boxe it up and Fed Ex it from NJ to MD.

I am also going to get a price on them rebuilding the sending unit.

I will post pictures when I get it back.

If all else fails, I believe I have a pretty clean example of one of these "up in the attic" that I'd make avail for a lot less then $600.
