Can anyone please help me out for upgrading my stock 2.56 non posi rearend. I wanted to know what would be the best gear ratio I was thinking 3.23 and a posi unit. Where would I get the parts that are good price and good quality? Thanks

 

2.32? I think you mean 3.23.

I say 3.23 or 3.42.

 

I converted my 2.56 to a 3.42 posi. Seems just right for perfomance and driving the streets. If you run alot of highway, I would opt for the 3.23.

 

What are your intentions for your car? Engine size,tire size? Overdrive?

 

I just want to cruise around in the car and drive it on weekends. It has a rebuilt olds 350 with a three speed tranny. I have 14 with 245 tires right now but might go to 15 with bigger tires.

 

I called some guys around here they want $1500+ to do the rearend. I looked on ebay and found this Eaton Posi Package GM 8.5 10 Bolt Gear Set Bearing 3.42 for $624. I am really good with my hands and wanted to do it myself but have never done it before. If someone could guide me I could probably get it. Thanks

 

I would put a 3:42 in it.There's a place in Iowa,Quick Performance that sells budget/cheaper kits for the 8.5" for $535.00 with free shipping.It's a copy of an Eaton posi,some type of gear,and japan bearings & seals.
If you are planning on trying it yourself,you will need a dial indicator at the least,and a spare pinion bearing,to hone-out,to trial-fit pinion shims.The pattern needs to be exact,or it will make noise & possibly eat itself.
That kit for $624.00 should have better pieces.Find out exactly what they are.

 

I want to know if theres anyone selling them in a package posi unit, gears, and the small parts. 3.42 may be too much for it and 3.23 is what I was told by my mechanic. I do want to do it be myself but never done it before and might have to get it done.

 

Those are packages.The one you found for $625.00,and the one I mentioned for $535.00,are kits or packages.They include the posi unit,gears,bearings & seals. I don't know if they include the installation shims or not.Check with them.
If you are looking for a complete rebuilt rear,ready to install,I have those for $975.00 plus the freight.

Decide what tire you are going to run THEN pick your gear ratio. Keep the horse in front of the cart.

 

Stay away for the super cheap parts or you will end up with a headache and end up paying double down the road not to far...lol.
