72 cutlass convert rear end swap

hi guys long time no post,,,,,been working on a 72 cut and have a chance to get a posi from a 78 87 doner just wondering on the fitment into my 72 any thoughts or pitfalls ....thanks crank.it

Not only that, IF you were able to get it under the car it wouldn't last too long.

thanks guys....I measured from brake plate to plate and get like 55 inches...the seller says its 51 inches from plate to plate....why wouldnt it last long????if it did shoe horn it in their...thanks crank .it

First, the 78-87 cars (except for the 84 H/O and 85-87 442 and GN) used the 7.5" rear axle that was originally born under the Vega. THAT"S why it won't last long. Second, the axle is 4" narrower, which means you need different wheels with a non-standard offset to prevent tire rubbing. Third, the upper control arm locations are different on the newer axles, resulting in suspension binding. This is a complete waste of time and money.

Just find an 8.5" posi carrier out of camaro/firebrid, wagon, or a truck and swap it into your rear. Or contact Brian Trick (507olds) on this board I'm sure he has what you need.

thanks joe and other posters for the info...the posi was hundred bucks complete thats the reason I was gonna make it fit which you have convinced me it will not....how about a nice eaton etchediam argueing over a hundred bucks then talk about eaton thanks muchly crank.it.....talk at ya soon

You can also pm Monzaz as he rebuilds units for these cars and usually has a few lying around ready for sale.
