rebuilding a rear end question.

i have done just about everything to a car as far as taking it apart or rebuilding it but never rebuilt a rear end. i have no doubt i can do it but just wanted input from you guys before i start. i have noticed a growl from the back of the car and now it is a little louder. i only put 150 miles on it after i heard it for the first time. i thought it may be a U joint but looked at them last week and they are good. this rear end came out of a 70 442 with 48,000 miles. it was drag raced much of its life and when i got it i just cleaned it out and added new fluid. it sat from the mid 80s till 99 when i got it. i now feel like this noise is from the rear end. is the factory book a good source for rebuilding one or is there better info and procedures out now that makes the factory book obsolete? also what oil do i use, one that don't need an additive for the clutches.

rebuilding rear

Rebearing is pretty basic...and as long as you keep all the shims in there correct sides etc. You will be fine. The likely hood that the ring and pinion are bad is low. It sounds like a bearing.

If you are swapping gears to a new set different ratio it does get a bit more harry. Jim

I think the factory book will be a good resource for rebuilding this rear end. Just be meticulous when rebuilding it and you should be fine.

If you have never done one or watched one done, PLEASE do not try it you will get into trouble. The crush sleeve is a bitch and you need a spreader for the center section unless you are very adapt.
