Ring and pinion

Where do I look for new gears? I was going to do a complete axle swap, but now am thinking maybe I should just have a different carrier and put the gears in it that I want. Where is a distributor for ring and pinions for these old style rear ends? I think the 3.73:1 and lower gears may be more readily available than a 2.41 or 2.29.

Here's my housing. And I think I will need another carrier, since I have 3.23's.

Personally I would invest the money in an overdrive transmission. The 3.23 is a REALLY NICE all around gear set and an overdrive would just make it all that much better. I intend to go that route somewhere down the road with mine.

Look at it this way.....you can invest 800-1200 into your housing to get what you want in a gear, or spend maybe a grand more and keep the car fun and still get the cruising manors you are looking for.
I know money isn't exactly growing on trees (believe me, I know), but I think the trans is the better way to go.

I dont think you will find any improvement in mileage by switching from the 3:23 to a 2:56 or 2:73 gear. The mileage around town could even get worse, since it would make the engine work harder to get the car moving. That 3:23 is a great gear.

picture...

Boy sure could use a better picture for ID.

Gears well any thing that is really freeway type are NOT usually available - There are plenty of GOOD used GM gears for the 8.5 (2.41 2.56) and even the 8.2 Pontiac Olds or Buick 2.56 2.78 ish

Yes you will need to swap out a carrier also -

If you PM I have plenty of the gears good used and even carriers to fit both the 8.2 and the 8.5 10 bolt rear.

Oh I see in your signature you have a 67...That will be a 8.2 10 bolt Only used gears and 2.56 is as low as you can go.

carrier breaks are as follows
2.56-2.78
2.93 3.23
3.36-4.33 and beyond

Just need to ID that rear first. Jim
