I bought a 9.3 rear end supposedly out of a 61 Starfire. I haven't opened it up yet, about the only thing I have done is digging out from the weeds and dragging it into my garage and Order the book from fabcraft (hasn't arrived yet).
Looking on Fabcrafts website and Monaz' website all I really saw was bearings, seals and gaskets not kit to rebuild the positraction or new positraction units available if I have to do that.
Does anyone know why they took them off their websites? Are there any other sources for parts?
Does anyone have any tips or tricks for me before I dive into this?
I have no experience with the 9.3 although I have rebuilt Chevy 12 bolt and Dana 60 rear ends before.
I don’t know what site you were looking at, but they have multiple rebuild kits for limited slip sets using their own gears. Screw the prices that Fabcraft has- just pay it! That is the best stuff out there! I was impressed with the quality when I had a 9.3 redone by them
There is a number stamped on the front face of the diff housing in the seven o'clock position as viewed from the front .
It's between the bolts that hold it to the axle housing .
You can look the number up in the service manual to get the ratio .
If there is an " L " stamped next to the number , then it is a " Posi " .
If it is a Starfire rear it should be a 3.42 .
I bought and installed a Fabcraft posi unit in my '63 . I haven't driven it yet though .
The Fabcraft posi unit cost $700 . Compared to the prices they want for worn out junk on E-Bay , it's a bargain .

I didn't see anything stamped but this casting number is around the 9 o clock position. It could be too dirty to see the stamping I will have to take a wire brush to it.
FabCraft has the only selection of gear ratio ring and pinions. Jim (Monzaz JDRace) knows what he is doing on these. Call both before you decide. If you are doing it yourself, the FabCraft book should really help. Good luck.

I haven't torn it down yet but I did clean the area that is supposed to be stamped. All I can make out for sure is an "X" and what could be an 8. Unfortunately only one axle spins when I turn the pinion. Backlash doesnt seem bad at all though.

I'll post up again when I start the dissection.
If that is an " 8 " then it should be a 3.42 ratio .
That is a good " get up and go " ratio .
Make sure to change your speedo gears .

I put in a posi from Fabcraft and it works great. Call them they are very helpfull. The only thing I wish I did was to change my gears to 3:42 mine are 2:87. They are great for hiway driving though.

Get a "spare" pumpkin and set it up with 3.42. A couple hours and you can have a gear change. And you can switch back as quickly.

Nah it was junk. With the new direction I'm taking I will probably eventually either put a Fabcraft center in it or move up to a custom Dana 60.

??? What do you mean junk? The third member and yoke are still worth money - you can buy all the parts for the center... ???

sorry do not agree with many of his techniques...lol.
to each his own. the tapping of the pinion bearing onto the pinion shaft is totally goofy...
good way to screw up a seal.
