Mini spool swap 70 type O 12/10 bolt
Hey I thought I would share a minor hick up I ran into installing a mini spool today. I had learned about the two different spline angles on 28 spline stock stuff related to the retro fit of a GM corporate 8.5 application mini spool into a 70 type O Olds 12/10 bolt that you need to use the 71-72 Cutlass/bolt in axles that share the same bearing and seal set up as the 70 but have 45/90 degree 28 spline cut angle versus the 30/60 degree spline of the 70 Olds so you can use a Powertrax or mini spool in the Olds rear. I had got a $40 mini and a borrowed set of axles to do the swap in my original 3.08 and saw the two last blocks that the cross pin go thru would be flopping around because the mini is designed for the longer axle tips of a c clip style and that the blocks are fitted to work with that not the shorter bolt in variety axles that don't have the tip to seperate the blocks. So luckily I thought well heck just stick a spring in there that pin can go through and it will keep it in proper place when idle and when moving the rotating forces will obviously keep them in place as well . I found a single old 440 Mopar valves spring under my bench from 12 years ago and used the inner one and cut it down shorter and behold a slight spring pressure keeping the blocks in place. Yes I know this is cheesy just having fun with it. This setup will not see street use just a little track time on 26x10 slicks and my fingers crossed for a few passes. Barring any destruction later at the track soon from the 455 I would like to find a oem Olds posi for the 3.08 and or do the Ford traction lock 8.8 swap when the original drivetrain is reinstalled later
