How to remove oil seal rear axle 1956.

Hello,

I'm wondering how to replace the oil seal on my rear axle. It looks like the conical retainer (on the outside of the oil seal) is part of the rear axle. I might be wrong, but after cleaning, I was expecting to find a seam between axle and retainer, proving it is a part which can be removed and reinstalled. Now I'm not sure, or it must be a really tight fit. The shop manual doesn't explain much either. It looks like the seal can't pass this conical retainer.
Before I start applying force, does anyone have the answer whether this retainer is removable or not and how...?

Thanks,

Jérôme

Axle seal replacement

The complete center is removed. I will put the picture in a paint program and circle what gets removed
It is just easier to hit the seal with a 1/2" to 3/4" drift rod and just pry it out after you mangle it enough.

Reinstall your going to have to find a socket or a flat face race driver to reinstall the inner tube MIGHT have a little ledge to stop the seal from going in too far...BUT some of the OLD rears did not. So first things first you have to get the seal out of the way and clean the tube good and clean and visually inspect.

I think I have those seals on the shelf too. I will try to take a picture so you can see what they look like.

This is what you need to remove that old seal. Along with the slide hammer.
Just hook it behind the seal and yank it out.
