Hello guys, I purchased a full 3.42 posi rear end from a 69 442 because I could not find any gears for my rear end. I brought it to my guy to take a look at and there is pitting in the ring gear. He says that the gear will work fine but it will make a humming noise. He said personally he wouldn't use them. He has another set of 3.42 gears that he thinks will fit and he is going to let me know. If they don't I know how hard it is to find them so I may be in trouble. My question is does anyone here have experience with the pitting issue? Does it really make any noticeable noise? Sorry I tried to make the picture bigger but couldn't. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Picture is too small to see how bad the pitting is. My truck has 241k on its rear end. The gears show signs of pitting and or galling and work perfectly. No unusual noises. I just makesure to clean the rear out well when I change the gear oil. I'd say run it and use some good oil like Lucas. If there is a slight hum you may not even hear it with your dual exhaust. If he does indeed have another set of 3.42 that fit the rear I'd grab those for a spare.
I was kind of thinking the same thing about not hearing it with the dual exhaust. The extra gears he had were in perfect shape and he said he would sell them to me for $50 if they do fit my o-axle so I intended on buying them anyways. He is taking it apart so if they fit I will have him install the good ones and I'll keep the pitted ones for spares. Thanks for the info, I just wanted some reassurance that I would be okay if I ended up having to use them.
I can't really tell from the small picture,but you might be OK.Chances are,the rear sat in one position for a long time,and the uncovered teeth got pitted,from condensation,or whatever.If your mechanic does indeed have 3:42 gears to fit an O-axle,for $50.00,that's a steal.Just make sure they are for an O-axle,and not the regular 8.5" 10-bolt.I would also have the entire rearend gone through,with new bearings & seals.It is 40+ years old.The axle shafts & bearings on the 67-69 rears are also know for going bad,and eating the shafts,or the bearings spinning on the shafts,thus making the shafts unusable.Sometimes you won't know until you get the old bearing off the shaft.
He is taking it apart and checking everything out. Most likely putting in a bearing kit and seals. If he has gears for it I am going to have them put in. If he doesn't I am going to just use the ones in it. Thanks for info

Pinion bearings too tight too loose
Ring and pinion gears meshed wrong with backlash too tight or too loose
Pinion depth off and will make noise no matter where the backlash is set.
Gear oil does not stop the noise SAW DUST WORKS GOOD THOUGH...LOL

I am sorry about the picture, I stated in my original post I couldn't figure out how to get it any bigger. I don't have any experience with this stuff so that's why I wanted to ask if anyone had experienced any noise from a pitted ring gear. At this point due to the problems getting new gears I am just going to use it if he doesn't have another set.
Was that bought here a few weeks back ? If so It was being used as it was. I'm sorry to hear your having trouble. I dd list it as having some surface rust on a spot. If it was me, PM me, I'll swap you a 3.42 gear set.
