Differential Question

How are the axles in a '71 442 with a posi-traction rear end secured? That is, are they kept in the carrier by 'c' clips or do the bolts out on the end of the axle secure them?

They're held in by the four bolts/nuts inside the brake pads.

To expand on that just a little, the retainer plate is held on the axle shaft by a pressed on bearing. Remove the four backing plate bolts, then put the brake drum back over the wheel studs, open side of the drum out. Install three of the lug nuts, flat side towards the drum, so that they engage the threads but allow the drum to slide on the studs. Now use the drum as a slide hammer and the shaft will pop right out. Have a catch pan under the end of the axle tube to catch the drips.

one more thing

You might want to use a OLD drum as a slide hammer cause I have heard customers complain about this trick and it will bend the drum inner secure if the axles is stubborn. Just another helpful hint so that you do not cause another hidden vibration problem down the road.
