Axle removal

I am having trouble removing the axles on my 72 Cutlass. What is the easiest way? No c-clips! I guess I'm just used to chevy's!
Thanks again
Kevin

axle removal

Well, with out any help from the Olds "experts", I removed the axles with a slide hammer.
NOW- Could anybody direct me on how to remove and re-install the bearings and seals???
Any help???

Maybe I should just change my name to Ziff455 for any answers?

While a slide hammer obviously works, the low-buck method is to flip the brake drums around (open side out), start three lug nuts with the flat part towards the drum, and use the drum on the lugs as a slide hammer.

Replacement of the bearings, seals, and retainer ring requires a hydraulic press.

You figured out the slide hammer on your own. That's how you do it.

Most times it takes a machine shop to pull the axle bearings off and reinstall them and the seals. Money well spent just for the aggravation factor. At the very least you need a bearing press, and I don't know many folks have one in their garage. You MIGHT run up on a parts store that has one, but I'd say not likely at anything that's open on Sunday. Then there's the matter of having someone who knows how to use it...

Now, wasn't that slide hammer easier than fooling with those damn c-clips and lock pin? I hate those pins. Absolutely hate them.

Yah, the slide hammer itself would have been alot easier. However, I already had the pin and gears out looking for the c-clips! Oh well, next time I can turn 2 hours into 5 minutes!!
Thanks
