Axle Installation

Hello again:
Okay, after I get the axles back from the machine shop with new bearings and seals on them, What is the easiest way to re-install them in the housing without messing up the seals or something? One came out real hard even with a 5 lb. slide hammer. The inner ends of the housing are still real nice with no marks or anything.
Thanks
Kevin

Use scotchbrite to be sure any varnish or residue is removed from the inner surface of the axle ends. Use lube on the mating surfaces to help them slide easier. Then just tap away until you get close enough to use the bolts to pull them in.

Thanks Joe:
I was just unsure as they came out hard!
Thanks again!
When I get the rear done, I will be moving to the transmission. Turbo 400 OG out of a 71 W-30. It was working fine when removed 15 years ago and has been in climate controlled storage since. What do you think, total rebuild or just clutches and seals?
I know, I am getting a little ahead of myself! Anyways-
Thanks again
Kevin

Note that W-30s came with OW transmissions. OG was used in non-W 442s. I'd put in seals only if the trans was properly stored.

I had read that only the 70 W-30 came with the OW trans or code and that the 71 came with the OG. Anyways mine is a OG dated late 1970.
Thanks!
