Axle movement

I have a 8.5, 10 bolt 28 spline differential. I had the bearings and seals replaced with a tapered bearing. My problem is, the axle has some play in it and when I move it in and out. Could there be something missing or how do I correct it? Should I go back to the original style bearing?

What tapered bearing did you use? I thought the Timken Set9 was the bearing for that application.

I'm not 100% sure it came in a Ratech "ring and pinion" install kit. That probably explains it. Thanks

Axle end play problems on 1970-11976 GM 10 bolt 8.5

Not so much the bearing as it is the seal deal.
Set9
712146 seal <<<<<
Both Timkin

Seal must be at least .490 (almost 1/2" thick)
If the seal is .460 thick that is where your problem is going to be.

If the seal is black and gold it will probably be the WRONG seal. it is most likely a 2146 in a 712146 box.

Thanks Monzaz, that is exactly what I found out. I found those exact part numbers at a local store
