Any axle movement ?

I`m going to be opening up my rear end in the next day or so but I noticed some play in the right side axle.. there is none on the left is this normal?
by movement I mean the shaft has play going in and out of the housing a little bit

it is a O type open not sure the ratio in it yet

If this movement is not normal what should I be looking for ..axle seal maybe ?

If there's in/out movement, chances are the bearing is going bad. Replace the seal at the same time.

If this is a 67-69 axle,I would also remove the bearing, and make sure the shaft itself is still good. Those shafts are notorious for the bearings spinning on the shaft, thus turning them down,& leaving the bearing to float around or oscillate on the shaft. If this is the case,a bearing replacement will not correct much. You will need to replace the shaft too.

Joe & Brian thanks for the replys..... I`ll see what I have to deal with maybe today. I have 2 rear ends to go through. Maybe one is better than the other If I`m doing one shaft should I do the other as well? not really into pouring a ton of money into a open

oh and yes both are 67

any more end play than .030" and it needs replacement attention in my opinion.

Thanks J

Ended up checking my roller rear end..... I guess the old owner had just rebuilt it.... I had never looked before but everything is new inside plus it has new brakes... stripped it and just got back from the blasters with it.... painting tonight

Side note R2 stamping on right side tube gotta go look up the gear ratio

So I`m guessing this rear has been replaced with a 68/69 ? I can only find the R2 code as a 2.56 or am I wrong? or can I also go with the carrier casting #s

R2, R6, and R8 were used as 2.56 ratio stampings.

Thanks again guys for your help glad the other rear was in good shape
like I said not into dumping a ton into an open rear...2.56.... was hoping for steeper but it will have to do for now as chassis funds have come to a close for now after She is driving again I will look into a posi unit
