91-96 caprice posi rear swap into delta 88
91-96 caprice posi rear swap into delta 88
has anyone tried to swap a 8.5 posi rear end from a 91-96 caprice into a 1985 delta 88?
is the drum to drum length of the rear the same for the later b body as it is for 80-85?

You can buy a set of axles from me that are ready to go or a set from 89-90 Caprice taxi and police only. They’re 30 spline and 4.75x5
I’ve got a whole 94-96 Impala disc brake rear ready to go. 3.23 gear, new bearings, axles, and seals. You just need to buy pads and parking brake cables up to the one at the pedal. I think I have part numbers somewhere. I can get this axle to Joliet real cheap.

30 Spline; wo/Limited Slip Differential; w/RPO Code J50 (Power Brakes, Vacuum Boosted); 8.5 In. Ring Gear; w/3.08 Axle Ratio; w/2.73 Axle Ratio
Here are the pages from the Chevy parts book dated Jan 1991. Note that the 9c1 cars use the same drums as the earlier cars with 11x2 brakes - P/N 1244646. All of those have 5 x 5" lugs. And yes, you will see P/N 1244835 on the first page for 82-86 and on the second page for 1989-1990. Those are also 5 x 5". They are just thinner and thus lighter (17 lb vs. 23 lb.).
Although apparently not taxi or police, using the aforementioned axles with 30 spline and 4.75x5 bolt pattern or a drill guide from rottenleonard.com to redrill the bolt pattern will solve your problem.

I have a 1993 9C1 rear in my 85 D88.
I bought new 30 spline axles from Moser and had them drilled with the 5x4.75 BP. I also swapped all my stock brakes onto the caprice axle.
the 9C1 axle is 1/8" longer than the stock D88 axle, the regualr Caprice axles are 3/8" wider
You can also use a driveshaft from a 73-77 A Body car as long as that A Body has a TH350 trans (200R4 and TH350 yoke is the same) but I forget if you need one from a 2 door or a 4 door.
EDIT: I forgot to mention that the drum brake center bore will need to go from 2.73" to 3.08" to adapt to the Caprice axles. Drums are cheap anyway. Cost me an extra $20 to have this done
