drums to disk ?

Ok the question is how would I go about changing my stock 9.5 inch drum brakes on an 1985, delta 88 to disk brakes. As always all input is welcome and appreciated

First thing you'll need is a new proportioning (sp) valve for the brakes. You cannot just swap drum to disc without doing this on these cars. Plus I think it's kinda hard to get rear disc that will fit. IIRC one year Trans Am's had rear disc and it was a rare model. Don't quote me on that though. That will have the same bolt pattern as your Delta.

The other way to go it to swap in a 91-96 Caprice 9C1 rear. Easier to get rotors for. You'll still need that valve since the master cyl will not be able to handle it on it's own, eps if the rear calipers are larger than the front. Of course the 91-96 B-Body used a 5x5 bolt pattern on the wheels. You can use an adapter, get new rims with 5x5 for the rear and 5x4.75 for the front, or the thrid option is to buy new axles from Moser and have them made with the 5x4.75 BP instead of the 5x5, but then your back at the same problem as above

IMHO, it's not worth it. I'm planing on a complete rear end swap, but I'm going to be using a 8.5 rear from a 73-77 A Body car. I've seen rears going for as low as $40 for an open. Then I'll just buy new axles from Moser and a new posi unit. Since I'm going new in the old housing, I'm upgrading to 30 spline as well. No price difference, so why not

Rear brakes

Check Speedway Motors-
They have a kit for the 8.5 rear with everything included.
And the price is very reasonable.
Only thing that will happen with rear disk brakes is you will lose your Emergency brake !
But there is a kit with a parking brake built in.
The kit is completely bolt on and includes-
2 vented rotors
2 gm calipers
pads and hardware
You will just need a new proportioning valve 65.00
Brake kit basic $349.00
Kit with E-brake rotors $429.00

I;'ve been doing research and "J-Chicago" has said that anything that will fit a 73-77 A Body, will fit the 78-96 B Body as well. I also found a 3rd gen El Camino site that said the same thing but those guys like to put the 9C1 rear on their cars.

You can see if you can find a posi out of an A Body car, but I've found they are kinda hard to come by and I have yet to find what gears those cars had. I've heard a lot of 2.41 posi (no thanks)

They are 28 spline axles. The BBC 454 in the 73-77 era was maxed out at 245 HP. Didn't find a torque number. Not that strong of an axle IMHO, if you're going to put power to it. If you want a cruiser, then in stock forum, it will be fine.

I'm looking to buy an open rear for $40 and just swap all the guts. Moser axles are $260 and I found a few companies selling Alburn posis for $530 with the gears and install kit. And since it's the same price to go with 30 spline over the 28, I'm going 30.

91-96 B Body rear will fit as well. 30 spline unit and 3.08 posi with the 9C1 package. They are pricey and the wheels are a 5x5 bolt pattern. You'll need either wheel adapters, different wheels for the rear, or an all out axle swap. At $300-$500 for that rear, then drop another $260 on top of it?!? I'll pass
