If your gear set looks good, then, there should be no reason to change it. And should have no problems. Be sure to change both pinion bearings, measure the back lash, and a take a pattern reading before you take it a part.

For your axle bearings. That would be A9 or set9. What ever you do by a good quality bearing as I have had problems with the so called house brand bearings.

if you increase your rear to a 373,.....your out come will be higher rpms ( OVER 3g) on the highway.

And you can't put a 3.73 in an O axle as that ratio is not made for it. It would either be a 3.42 or a 3.91.
If you want a 3.73 you'll need either an 8.5 10 bolt or a chevy 12 bolt.

Sorry, The question i should of asked why is the an rpm limit through the rear gearing for A/C cars. Lowest gear availible for A/C cars was 3:23 ratio.

An AC car could have anything from a 2:56 to a 3:42. The SX cars were known for having the smaller gears.

According to literature for 1970 323 was lowest gear allowed. I will double check on this info.

The 3:42 was optional on an AC equipped car.Anything higher than that would void certain warranties,if it was ordered.

According to the factory option list for 1970 Cutlass/442 the 3:42 gear was not availible with A/C. Visevera on the A/C box it says N.A. with 3:42 geaR

Not sure what list you are looking at.The 3:42 gear was optional with a 455 AC car.Two of my previous 70 W30 autos with AC had the 3:42's ordered with them.The other ones I have had,came with 3:23's.A friend had one with 3:08's.
I did meet someone about 10yrs ago,who had a 70 W30 auto,with AC,and it was specially ordered with 3:91's.
The 3:23 was the standard gear for a 455 AC car though,unless ordered differently.The 3:42 was optional.

I have the original 1970 Oldsmobile wholesale car order 4-4-2 model form for when you can select any option you would like from 1970 marked and filled out by the original owner. I also have a copy of the orginal book called Salemens prices, equipment etc. The same book the salesmen carried around in 1970 to shown what accersories and option cost and what was availible. Actual writing on form as quoted "G92 3.42 to 1 performance rear axle package-extra cost- includes anti-spin and heavy duty radiator(N.A. with "C60" or "Y72")
The option for air conditioning "C60" says C60 air conditioner (N.A. with "M21","G88" or "G92".

I am just repeating or quoting information in my hand. Please forward e-mail address as i can forward digital photos of paper work.

Oh i agree!!!, i was just stating the facts from the paper work in front of me. I have all original 1970 paper work from when the car was purchased, including trade in and loan papers.

We might be trying to compare the options/availability of the SX to the 442/W30.The SX could be had with a 2:78.

I've seen many of the same documents that state no 3.42 on AC cars, but my car does have it (no telling its original) but I know of two other folks who had W27 rearends on an AC W30 cars with 3.42s in them just like mine.

G88= 3.91
G92=3.42
G91=3.23
JL2=disk power front
