65 8.2 10 bolt - what's the deal?

Looking for details on this rear end. Its in a 65 cutlass, factory posi, 3.08 gears. I know most people swap with a different rear all together rather than building these, but if I wanted to rebuild/upgrade this rear are the parts available?? Dick Miller claims parts are not available, no carriers, no gears, etc. He says if I want to change gearing or carrier I need a completely different rear end. However, I see carriers and gears offered by Auburn & Eaton among others. So like the title says, what's the deal?

From what I think I know that rear is a pontiac 8.2 10 bolt cover rear often called a BOP rear. It is about an inch or 2 shorter in length than the 66 up rears 10 bolt or Olds 12 bolt. I think aftermarket posi units are available as well as steeper gears but the carrier must be correct to go from a lower numerically rear to 355 and up gears.

That is what my research is showing me. I don't understand why Dick Miller would tell me the parts just aren't available. He seems to not offer much information anytime I have ever called him, not to mention his inflated prices are a turn off.

That being said, what would the gear range for my factory carrier be if it now has 3.08?

Here is the Eaton and Auburn carriers i was looking at for my application:

Well from my experience if you are not waving cash in front of Miller he just cant be bothered and often just hangs up the phone. A member here Monaz is a rear guru, he can answer your questions.

Dont need a new rear end housing, parts are available. I used Quick Performance for a 3.90 gear and carrier in my 65 442. They sell on ebay. Parts are Yukon Gear.

How do you like the yukon? Was the install kit, bearings gaskets hardware, good quality? I found a website with a similar package for about the same price. How long have you been running that rear? Any problems?

I have a b.o.p 8.2 rear with an eaton posi diff and 3:55 gears. It's an ok rear for the street but if your going to build big power and sticky tires those 28 spline axles prob won't last.

I'm in the process of building a chevy 12 bolt since I'm now over 500 hp.

My 65 is a street machine and won't have more than 400hp anytime in the near future......that's why I am thinking for under $1000 I could rebuild this one with a new carrier some lower gears.

I'm pretty sure parts are still available for the 8.2.
I did mine about 3 years ago...

pARTS 10 bolt 8.2 Olds

Yes 10 bolt 8.2 rear will be the same as the Pontiac and Buick from 1964-1967
They will all use the 10 bolt BOP carrier (depending on the ratio you want 3 and 4 series are available in the aftermarket.
Most carry the 4 series Eaton Auburn Yukon Dgrip Power trax can all be used

NEW ratios are 3.36 3.55 3.90 4.10 4.56 4.88 5.13. The steeper gears are getting very hard to find as most guys will go to a larger rear end to deal with those steeper ratios
Rebuild kits
Axle bearings and seal kits...

We always carry in stock the 3.36 3.55 3.90 ratios
Eaton Auburn and Yukon

Just PM if you want some quotes on parts.
