1972 Cutlass 'S' rear end question
On my rear end housing the digits SA B336 1 are stamped into it. Does anyone know what this means? I'm trying to determine what it came with for gears factory. i was told my an old mechanic that if I make a mark on the driveshaft and one on the tire and spin the tire 1 revolution, and count the number of times the driveshaft turns its pretty accurate. This came out to be the driveshaft turns 1.5 to 1.75 times per one tire spin.
Besides opening up the cover, is there another way to determine what the ratio is currently? I believe they have been changed and are lower, something like 3.55's maybe.
The reason I want to know is my speedometer is 10+ miles per hour off. I changed the tire size as I found the correct SSII wheels and it helped a little. The transmission has a small leak where the speedo cable is and I would like to replace the seal and put the correct gear in at the same time.

Also, it is best to turn the wheel more than 1 turn for greater accuracy.

Smash bumped the thread, but thanks!

Doh! I saw the two posts before mine were yesterday but didn't notice the original was 5 years ago. This is what happens when I check the message board with an iPad instead of a real computer. Oh well, at least anyone who reads this will have information that may be helpful.
