1971 olds 2.56 posi

I have a 71 cutlass s that has a posi rear end. As far as I know it has about a 256 gear in it. I have gathered a little info and found out that I cannot put different gears on this carrier. Does anyone know if a chevy 10 bolt carrier will work in this rear end? Here in phoenix its possible to get mid to late 80-90 rear ends with 373 posi for what I consider to be reasonable prices 200. Any help would be appreciated.

thanks
Leche

You can put any gear on that carrier IF you use a ring gear spacer. Mr Gasket #908A.
If you have a 2:73 or numerically higher, you will not need a spacer,as you will have the 3-series posi unit.

Ring gear spacer

Thanks...I am going to look into this. I have never heard of a ring gear space before so this is actually a bit of bright light. It will hopefully make this project a bit easier to complete

thanks again

Ring gear spacer

I did some looking around on the net...and as usual you really cant find a "definitive" answer....Is there anyone who has tried a ring gear space and not had problems..I would use it with stock engine...no high horsepower etc?

Actually, if you can find "thick" ring gear sets designed for your 2-series carrier, this is structurally a little better than using the spacer. Basically the thicker ring gear has the spacer built in. This keeps the bolts from the carrier to the ring gear in pure shear. The spacer introduces a bending load that can cause bolt failure.
