The 68-72 rear ends are an inch wider than the earlier cars if I remember right. They also have springs that bolt in instead sitting on spring mounts. Look for a 70-72 rear, pretty common and easy to find, and easily upgraded

Rather than resurrecting an unrelated thread from five years ago, I've moved your question to it's own thread.

Be aware that the Type O axle was factory installed in the 1967 cars. The part number for the 1967 housing is exactly the same as the one for the 1968 housing, so the width is the same also. If your car has an 8.2 axle, it will be narrower. The actual width depends on which one you have.

The 66/67 P axle is the same width as the O Type 66-70 & 71/72 8.5 Corporate axles.. The 28 spline P axle shafts interchange with the 28 spline O type axle shafts with sealed bearings. A little tidbit, this is not true with the 12 bolt Chevy rear axles. The 66/67 are narrower that the 68-72 units. All Olds A-Body rear axles are the same width 66-72.

The 65 66 67 chevelle 12 bolt C Clip axles are 54 1/4" wide flange to flange
O axles and 68 to 72 chevelle 55 1/4"
At least that is what my tape measure read a few minutes ago

61" wheel mounting surface to wheel mounting surface. 60" was the early 64 65 era.

Again, are you talking about a Chevy 12 bolt or a Type O, which is NOT a "12 bolt", despite the number of bolts on the cover. The Type O anti-spin units are available, but are not easy to get.

The Type O is the Oldsmobile-unique axle used from mid-1966 through the 1970 model year. It shares virtually nothing with any other GM rear axle. It has 12 bolts on the cover but only ten bolts holding the 8.5" ring gear to the carrier. Parts for these are few and far between. If you buy parts for a "12 bolt" GM axle, you will get parts for a Chevy axle that do not fit the Type O.

Also yes there is posi carriers for the Type O 12 bolt cover rear end. Supercarsunlimited.com lists them on their web site and Greg there is a wealth of knowledge on these also.

Hope this helps
