I responded to an ad for a differential out of a 1967 442 4-speed. Turned out the guy was stripping the car, so I bought what was left. The guy was a butcher. I did get the original CA black and yellow plates and a title. Doors and glass appear to be good. Back window leaked and the trunk is a mess. I cannot find any letters on the passenger side axle tubes. There is an "H" on the back of the driver side axle tube. The # on the housing is 9788647.I was reading a thread about 4 pinion units vs 2 pinion units. Attached are pictures. Is it possible to tell from the pictures what unit this is?

 

I wish I knew more about the rear ends, but I don't.. someone on this site will know and they will let you know. I'm sure of that... what kind of things are still left on the car that are good.. shame people have to butcher things that can't be replaced. takes all kinds I guess. I am looking for a few things if you are interested in selling parts... Thanks - Fred

 

Looks like a 4 pinion unit. 4 small gears spaced 90' apart. Brian Trick will chime in and set you straight.

 

Definitely and 8.2 4-pinion cone type P rear. Which is a Pontiac rear correct for a '67 Olds. If you look in the window of the carrier, you see 2 of the pinion gears at 90 degrees apart. That means there are 4 of them. The best of the earlier 10 bolt rears. Visible on the edge of the ring gear will be stampings showing the ratio and date codes.

Yes the w-cars received the PONTIAC rears in the early 1967 the late 67 got the 122 bolt olds / o type which is a 12 botl cover and 10 bolt ring gear.

That really is a PONTIAC rear end in a olds...It was the strongest rear of its day for the BUICK PONTIAC AND OLDS cars. Until the 12 bolt OLDS rear was introduced.

Be sure to service the posi unit if you can open the posi and inspect the cones for bottoming out. Remember this is a 40 year old posi so do not expect it to be like NEW. Jim
