12 bolt O-type ring gear spacer???
I just picked up a 2.56 Olds posi rear (12 bolt cover/10 bolt ring gear) out of a 1970 Vista Cruiser. I'm wondering if there is a ring gear spacer available out there that would allow the use of a new aftermarket O-type 3.42 ring & pinion set with the factory 2 series carrier (#673) that this rear has? Would a widely available corporate 10 bolt spacer work or is this a custom fab job to make it happen? Thanks in advance.

I was able to get one from Drive Train Direct or National Drive Train 15 years ago so memories clouded. They all insisted I was looking for an 8.2" but I insisted it was 8.5 and they did search further to find the 8.5 type O I needed. Mr Gasket I believe?
I used a 256 geared limited slip carrier asm and fit the original to 308 to it, which isnt to bad of a stretch. But going to a 342 makes for a thick spacer. It should still be doable with longer ring gear bolts of course. A custom spacer isnt hard to make and shouldn't be to crazy on cost. Be sure you use ARP bolts and washers to bolt it up.
Now you have to decide if its a O type or a Corporate? Not sure on the 70 wagons and or if they got both rears (early & late production cars). Worst case is someone can take a mic and calipers to the assembly and whittle the proper dimensioned spacer with the right measurements.
When you do find the right answers circle back here.

No Corporate 8.5" until 1971 model year. If it is a 1970 model it is a Type O differential.

Another easy option is to offer up the 2.56/2.78 carrier for sale & use the money toward a modified 8.8" Ford carrier from Jim @ JD race. He can sell you everything you need to do it once & do it right. Why mess with a 45 year old posi carrier when you can have new?

Spacer for 12 bolt O type
I can still make the 'O' type spacers. I use to keep them on the shelf before the 3 series was more readily available from our own stock.
