10 Bolt Help
If the gears are good, then at least you have an 8.5" rear with 3:08's that are set-up for that rear,so it is something that you can still redo yourself.I would think if the seller knew those pieces were in there,he would have drained everything out.IF all of the teeth are good on the ring & pinion, then it's a little more obvious that it's the posi unit.Remove the axles & take the unit out.I use paint thinner at times. It works real well against the gear oil,and leaves everything as dry as it was when new.
You guys would love to see the one I opened yesterday. From the outside,it looked mint.No pitting or anything. The inside was a completely different story.Obviously water got in somehow, then couldn't get out.Part of the open unit was froze-up with rust.I'll get it knocked apart, then off to the hot tank.

Any 8.5" posi unit for 28-spline axles will fit.A lot of the truck used what they call a gov-lock posi, and you don't want one of those.
An Auburn unit is a cone style, very similar to what you have now. Those are about $350.00 with the shipping. The eatons are a clutch style, and are rebuildable. Those are about $425.00 with the shipping.
