10 bolt posi vs 12 bolt
#3
It all depends on what you are comparing. The 71-72 8.5" 10-bolt is just as strong or stronger than a 12-bolt Chevy, when both are being compared in stock form. The 12-bolt O-axle is not bad either, but the axles were made of a softer material, thus more prone to twisting or breakage. The 8.2" 10-bolt is not the greatest, but will work fine in a resto cruiser application.

Just blew the yoke right off my 12 bolt chevy rear end at the track, the ring gear lost a few teeth too. It seems to be the first weak link on the Impala 12 bolts when your over 600 ft lbs torque. Hp and torque mean everything when determining what parts to use.

507Olds (Brian) will steer you right, and does a lot of diffs.
If very high strength is what you want, you will end up with $2500-3000 in whatever rear you pick.
I got Type F 10 bolt (9" Ford) parts from Quick Performance, including bolt-in housing, Moser axles and center section, billet companion flange, etc.
You can also get all new parts and build up a 12 bolt Chevy, or a Dana with "ears" for an A body cast into it.
If you are on a "budget" AND your power level is moderate, Brian will give you good value with some used and some new parts. He is also knowledgeable on building in strength, possibly in stages.
If you are looking at 40 year old "stuff" it would be wise to have it gone through by an expert before putting big power through it.

thanks fellas for the input. i have a 455 that will be putting out 400hp max. i am a cruiser but on occassion will spin the tires. i have a chance to get a 12 bolt vs 10 bolt posi.

It's not so much the HP,it's the torque, and how you throw it.A blunt force like a trans-brake or clutch won't make it any nicer. You don't blow-up a rear at the end of the track. You do it right at the tree.

I don't think you are concerned with numbers or originality,so I would exclude the 12-bolt O-axle.Leave those for the guys that are doing correct restos, and need that exact rear.Nothing wrong with them, but for the cost of one of those, you are almost at the cost of a 12-bolt Chevy. I would choose either the 71-72 8.5" 10-bolt,or the 12-bolt Chevy.
