my 72 cutlass dies when put in gear....

soo, when i started my car this morning and let it warm up then tried to reverse out of my driveway my car died. only once i gave it gas though. i think it may have something to do with my choke on my carburetor, the linkage is faulty and sometimes doesn't close. could that be the problem? or got any other ideas?

Well, yes, an open choke on a cold engine will stall...
