I backed my '64 Cutlass into a pole last night and put a nice dent in the bumper. I called a couple of re-chromers and I am looking at at least $700 after I take the bumper off and take it to the place to get the work done. Another place may swap mine out for one that is already done but that will be even more. Never had to deal with this before, anyone have any thoughts or advice? I am in L.A. if anyone knows someone who can help me out
Your attitude towards an accident/mishap demonstrates saneness & maturity - accidents happen. I've witnessed others who you'd swear lost their left arm. Material possessions which make up a "hobby" aren't to be considered life-threatening events. Good luck with the repair/swap.

Thanks Norm, Trust me I was plenty bummed out last night after it happened. But like you say, not life threatening. I'll get it taken care of.
check out the bumper people you deal with California has lots of restrictions... My plater told me he cant really do good chrome a while ago, and last year closed. A lot of crappy plating out there.. Ive seen stuff peel a year after it was done.. You might be wise to look out of state..

Well, that will make it much tougher. I got some referrals from OCA that I have left messages with. Hopefully they will be OK
The chrome I had done was by Northstar Plating in Brainerd, MN. The chrome on the rear bumper faded to the nickle/copper substrate within a few years. I actually plan on having the bumpers wrapped instead of rechomed a 2nd time. Just do your homework and you'll be fine.
Your insurance company is going to try to give you shitty chrome. Be strong.
So an appraiser is coming to check out the damage. Apparently they are going to give me a check and I can do what I want. While we are on the subject.
How can you tell the difference between good chrome and "shitty" chrome. I went to a chrome shop yesterday to check out their work, it was one that people told
me to stay away from. Sure enough on the bumper he showed me the chrome was peeling. He said he had to do it again . Also the chrome in their shop did not seem as shiny as the chrome on my bumper. I have a shop in mind that does lots of show cars. But is there a way to know?
Yes I am grateful for that. Just found out I am fully covered by my insurance and they say it won't raise my rates. That's a relief.
It's small money, I wouldn't have claimed it. It won't raise your rates but if you have a second one within five years it will significantly increase your rates
