1994 cutlass ciera cooling fan issue

1994Hi, new member here. I am having a problem with my 94' ciera s 3.1v6 80,000 miles on it cooling/almost overheating. It seems the cooling fans aren't coming on when the car warms up. now, thoe guy i bought the car from had some overheating issues and said he changed at some point the thermostat, bleeder valve, water pump and heater core the guy is 70 and perhaps overlooked something. So i did the following, jumped the fan motor to the battery and the fan comes on. and also changed the temp sensor but couldnt test the resistance of old one cause batteries were dead on my meter. anyhow, i let the motor run for about 11 minutes and the upper hose was cool and soft so i shut the car off mind you its 35 deg here in NE Ohio. also, the antifreeze is the radiator was low so I added about 1 gallon and a quart to top it off but the overflow reservoir was full. I am thinking its perhaps the tstat being stuck but not sure. also the water pump doesnt look new it has some oxidizing on the housing so not sure what new meant to the old owner. I am trying to get this car running before it gets really colder out. any help would be appreciated. also when I looked at the car initially there was no smoke from the tailpipe and oil was not milky. so im not too sure bout a head gasket issue as of yet. the old timer knew to shut the car off when it got hot but says it really didnt overheat and get stuck someheres. thanks

A fan switch possibly? I had this issue with my 1991 Calais and replacing the entire fan mechanism solved the issue.

You can also test your fan by turning on the AC. The fan should cycle ON with the AC on.

Sounds like a fan relay issue...

I tried turning the A/C on last week when we had a 72 degree day, The ac was blowing but the fan did not come on at all. Old owner says the ac was working but has been cool outside when I went to look at the car. I was going to check the relays when we get a warmer day out like on mon and tuesday. supposed to be near 50 deg. too cold now to check them at 30 deg now. I have half the tstat job done just have to pop a new one in and put it back together. again probably monday or tuesday to see if thats why coolant isnt flowing to trigger the new temp sensor to turn on fans. we will see. thanks

If you are still having running/drivability issues I suggest checking compression and/or a leak down test to ensure no internal engine damage. (blown head gasket, cracked cylinder block/cylinder head(s), scuffed pistons, etc. Good luck, keep us posted with your progress.
I'm guessing you somehow responded to the wrong thread.
