Hi, Olds Guys.
I have a 64 Cutlass, when I bought the car about a year ago I noticed that the numbers
on the odometer were not lined up perfectly which I know means that at some point it was screwed with.
The engine on the car was rebuilt so who knows how many miles were on the car to start with.
Anyway when I bought it it had about 92,000 miles on it. The other day as it got to 96000.0
It got stuck. (see pic)
I have driven several miles or more and it has not moved.
Any ideas how to fix this?
I had exactly the same problem with the odo on my 62. There are thin plastic or metal tabs in between each of the number wheels on the odo drum. If one breaks, the odo fails. I had to replace the drum with one from a parts car.
Thanks Joe, Based on what I have read, I would have to remove the whole speedometer, possibly the whole dash?
I can probably find a new odometer or take to a place to fix. Worried about pulling out the speedo though.
Haven't tried anything like that...yet. I'm going to look at the manual but if you have any tips...
I have had the speedometer assembly out for the same repair, it is less time-consuming and simpler to remove only the assembly. So much other stuff to access and things can go wrong. Good luck.

Hi,
Can you explain what you mean by "assembly"
Also if you could help me out with how you did it I'd appreciate it.
Great car by the way. I think the first time I have seen one in a 4 door
OK I looked in the book and saw what the assembly is, Looks like a big job to get it out.

Hey guys,
I had not driven the car in several days. I took it out this morning and the odometer started working again.
The first digit is still half way between 2 numbers but the miles are turning. It hung for at least 10 miles before it got going again.
Not perfect but with the amount of work to fix I'll take it for now.

That's exactly what happened on my 62. I eventually got tired of it and changed the drum.

Yes I'm sure I will get tired of it at some point and change the drum. I am thinking about adding a clock,
Don't know if the instrument panel needs to come out for that. If so I'll get them both done at once, eventually.
