Hello guys, got back from local junkyard yesterday. I have found a few things that caught my eye while was there. First thing I found what belives to be a 403 not sure,( somebody put mailbox lettering stickers on the breather) but definitly know it is a olds. Don't know what vehicle it came out of no one there can tell me what car it came from, only thing they told me was that the only thing that was salvageable was the engine/transmission. I forgot to mention that also comes with a tranny, not sure if it is a 350/400. But they tell me it should be either or,the owner shot me a price of $300 for both items. would this be a good deal (not sure on mileage). The other thing I found was a 1979 Buick Grand National, was wondering if the hood off of it would fit on my 86 cutlass supreme brogham? And the last and final was the rear end out of it, would it be a good idea to get it to? The last and final question I have is, would the 403 fit directly in the place of my 307 with out any modification?

A 403 block will have 403 cast on the side of the block near the core /"freeze" plugs. Am not sure if its both sides or just the passenger side. It is the same basic block as the 307 so everything will bolt up. I dont think the Grand National came out till 1984 so I dont know about a 79 Buick rear and if a Skylark T type is considered a G body or if the hoods interchange.

 

Look at the numbers on the heads. (drivers side front of the motor next to #1 plug is a stamped number.) A 403 from the factory will have 4A heads on them. Now all SBO heads are interchangeable (with early exceptions) so you have to look at the block casting (just above the waterpump next to the oil fill tube to ID it.

And NO, that 79 hood will NOT fit you Cutlass. There was a Buick Grand National in that year. The one I have laid eyes on was brown in a junkyard in NJ.

** Edit ** I stand corrected...sort of. They were not "Grand Nationals" per se...they did have the correct logo, but they were called Turbo Regals.
