What baffles me is these “authors” who probably aren’t old enough to have been aware of these cars when new, driven them when they were new, or even spent enough time in the drivers seat to form a educated opinion.
Why was the Olds Cutlass the best selling car for so many years? PEOPLE LIKED THEM!!! That’s all that they need to understand. That idiot commenting on the styling, that’s what people wanted, that’s what people liked, that’s what sold, so that’s what the automakers built.
I’ll say it again, if today’s Big 3 stylists and designers would stop trying to force cars that they think people should want, and design things that look like what people would want to drive, then maybe the domestic auto industry wouldn't be such a mess.
Jeremy Clarkson of top gear is another one I can’t stand to listen to. I watched a little of bit of his “road test” of a Lincoln Continual, all he did was bitch about the lousy handling and soft ride, bitching about “the 200hp V8 engine”, the interior, the overall styling, blah blah blah.
Once again, if a car sold well, it’s because people liked them. Instead of picking them apart by comparing them to what’s offered today, maybe it would be more productive to understand WHY they were desirable.

Interesting article, thanks for sharing. There were quite a few laughable comments the author made. Of course the Cutlass sold better than an overpriced Volvo only yuppies could afford, or a POS import Honda.
My dad; Oldsguy, tells a story of a billboard ad he remembers for the 1976 Cutlass he saw regularly when he was first married to my mom. It made such an impact that he owned a 76 Cutlass that was stolen by the KCMO Police Department and the most recent Oldsmobile he owned was a 77 Cutlass.

I quit reading that site years ago when Jason was taking an anti-American sentiment on every subject he wrote about. He must think he's relevant because he appeared for 30 seconds on one of those History Channel specials on cars or some other subject from a few years ago. An irrelevant site written by an irrelevant person.
"So the next time you see one of those rare surviving Cutlasses, one of the tiny percentage of survivors out of all those millions of Cutlasses, maybe take a moment to really inspect it, get up close and look into a rust hole to peer into its oily soul, and see if you can get a sense of whatever dark magic was at play to make these things so wildly, inexplicably, popular."
He just doesn't understand and then goes on to judge it out of context. The proof is that these cars are still considered beautiful, elegant, sleek, and powerful! The pinnacle of the auto industry.
Inexplicable? It can be explained, shear beauty in design lines, great performance, a pleasure to drive. I did find the "look into a rust hole" funny, some guys get to look really deep when doing their body off restorations.

A quick search found the gentleman who wrote the article on his 50th birthday this year, from the Jalopnik site.
His peers there think he's "the greatest automotive journalist of our time....because he redefined what automotive journalism can be, and in so doing helped make the car world more inclusive than it has ever been".
The descriptive "irrelevant" seems well chosen. "Buffoonish" and "lacking credibility" even more so. What credible automotive "journalist" would be caught dead in a clown car? Besides, today's the first time I ever heard of this mafocker.
Ya gotta love self-anointed arbiters of taste. Mick Jagger's Lucifer is laughing his *** off.
Well, he's older than I thought ! he's 50. But I know why he likes them foreign rigs. He is from California. I spent quite a bit of time in California and have many relatives that live there and they are a different crowd.
I am just wondering, where he will hang the Pulitzer?
I also wonder when he will write the same article for the model T?

There's three things at play here. Jalopnik is a gawker media brand, and gawker is owned by a bunch of lefties who were stupid enough to embarrass Hulk Hogan with a sex tape that the divorcing husband of the woman made (definite cuck vibes here.) Being the last entity that found out what they were going to do when "Hulkamania comes for you" (brother), the Hulkster won big and Gawker died on the auction block. Jalopnik, one of the sites, was sold then.
The second thing is that this is part of Millennials advancing. Ten years ago, Millennials were just starting out and crying about how bad entry level work is. Now, they are trying to influence things. So, when you have some guy making deciding un-masculine witty jabs and snark and comments about things that he was never around for (and is subsequently completely wrong about) that's just Millennials being Millennials. I find it it off-putting.
The third thing wrong with Jalopnik is it is converged by lefties. I don't care about someone's politics, but, whenever they have a window to spout their views, especially a window having nothing to do with politics, they spout their ****. Then, their ratings tumble. I want to read an article about cars; I don't need political commentary. I also think this is why all the woke athletes in the Olympics, using their position which is a great honor to have, as a vehicle for their political agenda, instead of winning, are finding out no one here cares about them. It's like the old joke about "An [X}, a [Y], and a [Z] (where X,Y, and Z are avant garde sociopolitical identities) walk into a bar. I only know because they told everyone within 2 minutes."
So, the parent company was bad; most millenials are horrible researchers by inclination and ignorance, and every media pulpit is used for trendy causes these days. That's why the article sucks.
