I just wanted to share my experience working with Gary Tayman at Tayman Electrical to have my original AM radio converted to modern internals.
I have a1972 Cutlass and decided that I'd like the original look of the original radio that I had taken out in favor of an aftermarket unit. I sent my AM radio to Gary after visiting with him on the phone. 1 week later I had my radio back looking like it was brand new. He cleaned and polished it beautifully. I installed it last night and I'm just completely pleased with the results! It is now AM/FM/Bluetooth/Aux input capable. It sounds terrific, has plenty of power output for the 6.5" Pioneers in my kick panels and looks great.
If you've ever considered doing this, I encourage you to pull the trigger. We all spend a lot of money on these old cars, and sometimes the purchases put big smiles on our faces and sometimes you kind of wish you hadn't done it. This one is a solid grand slam in my book.
The coolest thing about it is that you can set all the push buttons for FM stations and the tuner locks right on the station and gives you great reception.
I have used Gary Tayman Electrical twice for radio conversions. He is expensive, but his boards have performed well, and I have never had a warranty issue with him. Thus far, I have been pleased with his work.
I will also add that he is comfortable with dominating the telephone conversation to a point that leaves little opportunity for the other party to interject anything into the conversation when one tries to contact him by phone.
Continuing, when I did business with him this last time the speaker I purchased from him was dropped shipped from an entity in California to me--damaged. I asked Tayman for a replacement and he attempted to push everything off on me and to deal with the speaker company directly. I had no receipt, no PO number--nothing, because I didn't deal with them; I dealt with Tayman. Plus, the speaker firm plainly states on their website: They don’t sell directly to the public, so I know they didn’t want to deal with a return from an individual.
Anyway, the terse conversation coming from Tayman didn't help the situation; we eventually ironed things out, but I felt wronged by his actions, and I let him know it.
Bottom line, no issues--smooth sailing. Have a problem? Expect waves from him.
For the FM stations, I dialed up each one on my shop stereo and then went and found the same song on the car unit and saved it. I didn't try to identify any AM stations to save.
