AM stereo radio

Back when I owned an 85 442 (bought new) the car was stolen from my wifes work place. The thieves took it for joy ride and left it abandoned. Before leaving the car they destroyed the radio. Insurance paid to replace it but the shop couldn't find the same radio so they replaced it with an AM stereo radio. I never used that because FM was the better stations then. This was before satelite radio was available. Anyone ever had this type of radio in your car?

Not in a GM vehicle, but in of all things a 1987 Dodge Aries K-car. It was Mama's last car, bought from dealer stock. One of the local AM stations was broadcasting stereo so I had a chance to hear "AM stereo".

She called me one day complaining her radio didn't work. Dead as a corpse. Not really thinking it might have some future interest I got her a junkyard AM-FM. After Mama died and I took over the K for a daily driver, that went dead on one channel and I put a Pioneer AM-FM-CD in it, which was in it when Bambi took the car out May 24 2009.

I also owned a 77 Thunderbird that had an AM-FM QuadraSonic 8-track. I had a couple of Quad tapes and it was pretty neat hearing Doobies "Captain and Me" bouncing all around the car.

Neither concept ever really caught on though. Radio stations didn't want to invest in the equipment and Quad tapes were double the price of a regular 8 track.

My old Fiero had the AM Stereo option radio - it was interesting, but most broadcasts in the mid-80's where I was were talk radio or sports most of the time. I'm not sure when this was discontinued. Did the AM stations stop broadcasting in stereo at some point?
