Side pipes

Has anyone ever installed side pipes on their 70-72 Cutlass. Just wondering what they looked like (if you were happy with them) and what brand you used. I don't know why, maybe it's cabin fever but I'm thinking that this spring I might try side pipes due to the fact that I need to replace the exhaust on my car anyway.

Positive and negative comments are welcomed!

Patriot makes striaght side pipes. The problem with running side pipes is that all of the straight side pipes I've seen don't have any muffler or resonator installed in them. To get a side pipe with a muffler or resornator you have to get the "Corvette" style side pipes. IMHO, I would prefer the striaght side pipes over the "Corvette" style.

Go old school and find a set of Thrush aluminum side pipes.

Or try here http://sweet-thunder.com/index.html and see what you can come up with.

Here's what got me started thinking about side pipes.

Some classic thrush pipes would be a nice find!

I wonder what ground clearance issues you would have? I know some of the approaches around here would cause me to crease a set of side pipes. Or at least scratch the hell out of the bottom of them.

Those sidepipes look way too low on that car, too short too.
They should be up next to the rockers more.
They used to call them leg burners, probably still do.

Lake pipes would be straight chrome, no mufflers with those.
Most large side pipes had replaceable glass packs in them that I messed with.
The old Doug Thorley chrome Show Tube headers and sidepipes were cool.

I would have a fit if she sat on my hood, or thank her...it all depends.

Gawd help. I know it was the 70s and all, but how much more ridiculous can you get than having side pipes on a Mustang II Ghia?

You got more will power than I do. I kept looking at the side pipes and the girl on the hood. Never did pay attention to the car.

Invest in a pair of kevlar jeans, or at least fireproof socks

Sidepipes on that Pintostang are gay IMHO.

They make 63" long 4" sidepipes from Hooker.
I put them on my 78 Camaro. 4 primaries twist into a single 4" outlet.
I personally don't think they would look good on an Oldsmobile though.
Only ONE of the 4 primaries is open, so I had a exhaust shop cut open the others and make me custom header adaptors.
FYI > You can't use long tube headers, it just won't work....

For the baffles I used Spiral Turbo Baffles http://www.spiralturbobaffles.com/

The chrome coating is cheap though.....mine didn't fare too well out in the Chicago elements.
I have to pull them off and recoat them.

Those sidepipes look pretty good even if they are eaten by the Chicago elements. They really do a good job of breaking up the lines of the car.

I like the looks of sidepipes on a 67 442!

This '70 pic is from "back in the day" on NY site

I installed side pipes on a 71 Cutlass, but hey, it was 1979 fercrissakes.

They DO have mufflers inside them. They do NOT get too hot that they burn your legs.

By the way, I hear that customized vans are making a comeback too...

The low line Lake pipes by Patriot don't have any resonator installed (those would be the ones I would use):

Which company makes them with a resonator (without the faux headers up front)?

Mine were Thrush brand. It wasn't a resonator, it was a real muffler that was nearly as long as the sidepipe cover.

Hmm... maybe they aren't made anymore. I have a set of Thrush glasspacks that are 45" long. However, I don't think these would look too nice as side pipes. They are the standard Thrush red. Plus, you need a pretty long side pipe for a full sized car. It would look sort of odd if the side pipe stopped 18 inches away from the rear wheel.

It appears that you are correct. Walker owns the Thrush brand and apparently did away with the side pipes. They do come up on ebay. Also, hang out at www.vintage-van.com - if you dare!
