I had my quadrajet (7040251) rebuilt and when I go to accelerate it will hesitate and starting it when it's cold it won't hold the high idle unless I keep my foot on the gas pedal for 5 to 10 seconds. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I'll probably end up bringing it back for the shop to fix but would prefer to fix it myself.

If you paid someone to fix it and it is having these troubles then I would take it back to the shop. Sound like your accelerator pump and choke might not be set right.

 

Brought it back to the shop that rebuilt the carb today and they really didn't seem too concerned. He made a couple small adjustments and then told me to check my timing and dwell. So I put new points in and set the timing at about 10 degrees before and no more hestitation when accelerating. Though when I step on the gas when I'm out crusing the secondaries are not opening up immediately so now I'm trying to figure that out.

 

Are the secondaries opening up at all? If the air valve lockout is not adjusted properly, it will not allow the secondary air valves to open.

If there is a delay , then the air valve spring has been adjusted too tightly.

Make sure the choke valve is fully vertical when the car is at operating temperature. (choke cover may need adjustment towards lean)

 

The secondaries are opening it just takes a second or two. What is the air valve spring and where is it on the carb?

 

That is a bummer that the shop owner is being a commie. I would jump on them like a wolverine on a waffle!

 

The air valve spring is on the back passenger side of the carb under the air horn(top part of the carb). If you have a small mirror, you should be able to see the screw. You should be able to feel a slight resistance when pressing down on secondary air valves. If it feels to tight, follow the carb kit instructions to adjust. Loosen the adjusting screw until it no longer contacts the pin. Then retighten to the specified # of turns, usually 1/2 to 3/4.

 

It is supposed to take a second or so. That is the function of the choke pull-off. The choke pulloff controls the rate of opening, not the spring. 1/2-3/4 turn on the spring is sound advice. If this doesn't solve your problem and you want the secondaries to open faster, modify the choke pull-off.

I needed a new choke pull-off recently and picked one up at the local auto parts store. It is way too slow to bleed off vacuum. It will need to be modified to open quicker. The best way is to remove the restriction from the pull-off and use a metering valve on the vacuum line to perfectly dial in the rate of release.

 

Looks like I have everything corrected now. I replaced the choke pull off, changed the secondary metering rods and adjusted and adjusted the air valve spring. The secondaries are opening up when the pedal is to the metal!
