Looking for More info

I am trying to find more information out about my 72 cutlass supreme. My trim tag under the hood is as follows: Could someone decode this for me?

ST 72 34257 R 07189 BDY
TR 983 A65 19 19 PNT

The car is currently Black exterior with Blue interior. I am Looking into painting it but wanted to know what the original color was. I thought from my first post on this site the color was going to come back white or blue due to the interior being the cloth with pattern and vinyl mix.

Also I would like tips on where to find the code options for the car? like the Y79 for the Cutlass SX. Where is this kind of information. I tried to find the build data sheet under the front seat, but with no luck. I did find some paper stuck into the springs but it was ripped with no info on the piece.

Where else on the car are the options listed? I looked in the truck and i have some original stickers, one is for the Posi rearend. Any help would be great.

Hello Ryan
Other places I've found build sheets, under the carpet under the console, with bucket seats behind the plastic seat back, on top of the gas tank, with a full sized car twice I found it behind the drivers side door panel. Good Luck! John

If this from the Olds FAQ is correct, then it means your car has/should have a split bench seat.

A65: Seat Back, Front Seat Split

Sounds like you've checked several usual places for a build sheet and 2blu442 had very valid suggestions too. With a bench seat car, try under the carpet where it overlaps on either side of the seat and under the rear seat bottom cushion too. Maybe even up under the rear window package tray - Fremont, CA Supremes often had them stuffed in there. Arlington, TX-built cars like yours used an 8"x11" build sheet, so that's what you are looking for.

That sheet is the only place options would be listed, except for the original engine application - what is the letter in the VIN before the "R2xxxxxx"?

I'd love to see a few pics of Ebony Black with a Blue interior! Please post a couple if you can.

In any case, the Y79 option you mentioned will definitely not be on your build sheet if you find it since your car is a '72.

Vette,

Thanks for the info. Do I have to disassemble anything to get underneath the rear seats and rear window?

I will keep looking,

You should be able to see up under the package tray from inside the trunk. To pop the rear seat bottom, push down on the front edge while pushing towards the back. The cushion should then pop up and out towards you.

One more trick since it is an Arlington car and may have a sheet on top of the gas tank: Get a digital camera with a flash, crawl under the car so you can reach up behind the rear axle and blindly snap a few flash shots of the top of the tank. You MIGHT be abe to see if one is there from the photos, although it may be under the rubber mat on top of the tank if it's there at all.

Good luck!

Terry
