how the f#$& do you get the drive gear clip on?
I have a '69 Cutlass with a Turbo 350 trans. The driven gear was shot, the speedo housing o-rings were shot. I took the works apart to discover the drive gear was floating on the shaft. I bought a new clip but how is it installed?
any help is appreciated.

If you have the correct metal retainer/clip, put the clip in the gear, hold it away from the output shaft and against the drive gear and slide the drive gear on over the output shaft then let the clip's tab slip into the divot/hole on the output shaft. gl.

No, you simply need to support the trans with a jack, remove the crossmember, and remove the tailhousing. The speedo drive gear can be replaced with the trans in the car. Note that you MIGHTASWELL replace the rear seal (and probably the bushing) while the tailhousing is off.

Remove the two trans mount bolts, put a block of wood between the jack and trans pan, jack the aft of the trans up just enough to clear the cross member, remove the spedo cable, then remove the 4 bolts securing the tail shaft housing to the trans, place a drip pan underneath and pull off the tail shaft housing. If you do replace the tail shaft housing bushing, you'll need a special bushing installation tool, don't try to use a socket, you'll tear up the bushing trying to install it or crack the tail housing, then you'll be hitting the local salvage yard and mad as a hornet. I would look at it and see if it's in good shape and go from there. It's more than likely in fair to good shape. Post some pics if in doubt, they generally wear more on the bottom.
