installing a starter on a 71 cutlass with a 350 rocket

Guys, not as mobile as i used to be but have to install a starter on my 71 cutlass. Where is it located on the engine? Last one i changed was 20 yrs ago on a camaro. This starter has the starter celinoid built into it just cant find where on the engine it mounts. any ideas?

Hopefully the all-important side bracket will still be on it!
If not, you should get one, ideally the wide heat-shielding 455 bracket (if you have dual exhaust...)

The solenoid is on top of the starter.

Let me know how much of a pain it is to replace - I need to do mine soon and I have never replaced a starter in an American car.
(I had done many on 10 year old toyotos for friends...)

I recommend that your remove the wiring before you remove the two large bolts holding it in, otherwise you end up with a starter hanging by the wires and then you have to hold it in the air with one hand to break loose the nuts holding the wires on with the other, not too easy. It is heavy enough on it's own if you are laying on your back. If the car is on a hoist it isn't so bad.

DISCONNECT THE BATTERY FIRST!!! Its pretty easy two 3/8 bolts and three wires. Do the wires first then undo the bolts. If your doing on your back put a jack stand under the starter before you remove the second bolt. It weighs about 30 pounds JKaz

Or better yet, use a floor jack (if you have one) to support the starter while you disconnect the wires. Then just lower the jack with the starter on it. Makes installation easy too, especially when your trying to start the mounting bolts. (You know how they refuse to start easily while holding 30 pounds with your arm in a 45 degree position)Chumley

Where abouts are you? Maybe someone could help you out if it's difficult for you to get under there.
